Sun & Sanctuary
Welcome to the Jungle

The Sanctuary

A Sun & Sanctuary retreat is a perfect introduction to Lakshmi Rising’s Costa Rica home. Located on the magical Nicoya Peninsula, The Sanctuary at Two Rivers is a 100% off-the-grid, solar-powered facility featuring luxurious, modern accommodations in a breathtaking jungle environment. Add to that an extensive spa menu and Gaia Gourmet’s organic vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free cuisine, and you have the ideal location for a week of relaxing and recharging.

Restore or Explore

Morning asana practice, afternoon meditation sessions, and delicious Gaia Gourmet cuisine will be the framework for you to enjoy our community. Aside from that, the schedule is up to you!

Venture out and explore nearby Montezuma, Cabuya, or Santa Teresa, or stay on-site and indulge in massage or acupuncture treatments, lounge by the pool, refine your meditation practice, or hike along the river bed with old-growth trees and tropical birds.

The Experience

Your week-long Sun & Sanctuary retreat begins on Sunday. We invite you to arrive any time after noon and before 4 pm. Each weekday you’ll join other participants in our retreats and teacher trainings for a two-hour morning Lakshmi Rising Hatha Vinyasa Flow and an evening session of chanting, pranayama, or meditation.

You’ll fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle in our luxurious jungle lofts, and enjoy three delectable, vegetarian or vegan Gaia Gourmet meals each day, until your departure on Saturday after breakfast. Simply choose the week that works best for you, and get ready to rejuvenate!

It works best to plan your travel for the day before the retreat begins (Sunday) and to spend Saturday night in the neighboring towns of Montezuma or Cabuya. There are hotels, hostels, and Airbnbs at all price points. Travel delays are quite common, so this will give you some buffer time to avoid stress or missing our opening session.

The Sanctuary is 1km up in the jungle, so guest arrivals and luggage transport must be organized ahead of time. If you are arriving at the same time as others, Lakshmi Rising arranges a shuttle from Montezuma to The Sanctuary’s entry point on Sunday at around noon ($5 per person). If you let us know where you will be on Saturday night, we can also arrange ground transportation from there! We will transport your luggage, but please arrive wearing sturdy river-hiking shoes for the 20-minute hike in.

The simplest route for international travel is to fly into Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Santamaría in San José (SJO). From there, we recommend taking a short flight from San José into Tambor (if available). The domestic airlines are: SANSA, Costa Rica Green Airways, Skyway Airlines, and Aerobell. The first three airlines listed leave from SJO’s domestic terminal. Aerobell leaves from Pavas, a 40-minute / $15 taxi ride away. Because of flight schedules, it may be necessary to stay Saturday night near the airport in San José and fly to Tambor on Sunday. It is a beautiful 20-minute flight followed by a 40-minute taxi ride. Book this ticket ahead of time as they tend to fill up. There is a $2.25 airport tax to be paid upon disembarking the small plane–be ready with exact change.

There are also other routes you can take with a bit of research, time, and coordination. Shuttle service is available through Montezuma Expeditions or Tropical Tours for approximately $50. Shuttles leave San José early in the morning and can bring you directly to The Sanctuary’s entry point. This is about a 6-hour trip. Local buses from San José to Montezuma are available (as of July 31, 2020) on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 8am, and can be booked here.

We do not recommend renting a car.

We serve a delicious lunch on Sunday at 2:00pm, so plan to arrive by then, if possible. Plan your departure for late morning on Saturday. Checkout time at The Sanctuary is 10am.
