We searched far and wide, set our focus upon the exquisiteness that is Italy, and explored the country to find the most suitable place for our offerings, a Sanctuary to hold us as we delve deep into the arts and sciences of Yoga while enjoying an all inclusive, luxurious and culturally enriching journey.  We found this Sanctuary in the Chianti region of Tuscany, the heart of the “Golden Triangle” between Senna, Arezzo and Florence; La Selva di Giordano. This magical place, overlooking the gentle slopes of the Arno valley, is a vast 32 acre natural garden of ancient oaks, olive groves, grape vines and overflowing meadows with indigenous wild flora and fauna. Similar to our beloved Sanctuary in Costa Rica, two flowing streams of water enhance the potent high vibration of the land. The totally restored 17th century farmhouse, two additional smaller villas, a spacious studio specifically for Yoga, four salt water swimming pools and an outdoor amphitheater are peacefully nestled into this healing environment, intertwined as if in symbiosis. Although the main villa was built more than 300 years ago; the recent restoration has maintained the spirit of the house with respect to the original architecture and use of hand-made and natural materials following bio-architecture parameters. The design and decor are simple and comfortable, with inspiring use of light, art and antiques. The owner is an artist, visionary, florist and arborist who stumbled upon this run-down property while hiking and has passionately and wholeheartedly enlivened it beyond its original beauty.

We have created a very special opportunity for you to join us at La Selva: The Sanctuary at Tuscany in 2018; October 1 - 8: Gaia Gourmet Cuisine & Culture Yoga Retreat. This immersion features healthy, organic, farm to table, vegetarian Italian dishes (with the option of pairing the culinary delights with local red and white wines from this infamous wine producing region), daily Lakshmi Rising Yoga with Dr. Liz Lindh (Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Credits available), 3 cooking classes, options for curated excursions to cultural sites, food & wine adventures to farms, vinyards, truffle hunting, shopping & more, in-house massage therapy & healing body work, and exclusive enjoyment of the 32 acre private botanical garden property.

PLAN FOR YOUR EXPERIENCE

Arrive in Florence by Sunday September 30. It is your responsibility to find lodging on Sunday night. There are many hotels, hostels and Air BnB’s in Florence but book ahead, September/October is a very busy time there. You will have Monday morning to explore the beautiful city. Check out Il Duomo, the Uffizi Gallery or just wander around and soak up the sights and culture. It is a good idea to reserve tickets ahead of time so you do not have to wait in the long lines.

Meet us at Osteria Cipolla Rossa (Via dei Conti, 53/r, 50123 Firenze FI, Italy) at 1pm on Monday October 1 for an opening celebration welcome lunch. We have designed a delicious four-course, slow-food endorsed vegetarian tasting menu paired with wine…our treat! Our meal begins with bruschetta, fresh tomatoes, basil and tuscan olive oil, Florentine white beans and sage, and spicy sautéed greens. Our next course will be Ribollita, a typical tuscan bread soup with vegetables. This will be followed by small plates of homemade Saracino tagliatella with fresh aromatic herb pesto, cherry tomatoes and ground toasted almonds, and also handmade gnocchi with a decadent truffle cream sauce. We finish with dessert; pumpkin pie with sweet gorgonzola cheese sauce and chocolate cake.

This restaurant is close to the train station so bring your luggage with you.

After lunch, we will meet at 3:45pm right in front of Santa Maria Novella Train Station (purchase ticket online http://trenitalia.com for the 16:13 train that arrives at 16:50 from Firenze S. M. Novella to Montevarchi-Terranuova). We won’t be able to wait for you if you are late. Board the train directly if you don’t see us. It is a 40 minute ride. We will provide a shuttle from the station in Montevarchi to La Selva with a stop at a local market for snacks, wine and supplies.

We also provide a departure shuttle to Montevarchi-Terranuova train station on Monday October 8. We check-out of La Selva at 10am and travel our separate ways from the train station.

You will need to bring a yoga mat, any props you use in your practice, water bottle (there is delicious natural spring water available for us), flashlight with batteries, sturdy hiking shoes, eco-friendly personal care products (lavender, peppermint & tea tree essential oils come in handy), first aid necessities (arnica, sore muscle balm, ibuprofen, motion sickness medicine, allergy medicine and bandages may be useful), easy to store snacks like dried fruits, nuts and nut butters (we provide three meals but bring extra if you think you will need it), and cash for excursions and massages.

We have carefully curated unique culinary and cultural adventures as a part of this journey. Participate in as much as you wish! Everything is optional and a la carte. You can pay for them as they happen. Since all of these excursions are paid directly to the provider, prices are subject (but not likely) to change. Please note that on the excursion days, there will be limited meals served at the villa (indicated below).

On Wednesday October 3 we have a delightful excursion planned to a boutique biodynamic vineyard. This tour includes a reception with the owners and wine producer, a walk in the vineyard and a visit to the wine cellar followed by a special wine tasting and four course vegetarian lunch paired with wine. The cost is 90€ including transportation. Lunch will not will be served at La Selva.

We will visit the picturesque city of Cortona on Thursday October 4. This is where the book and film, “Under the Tuscan Sun”, are set. We have been invited to a small family farm for a cheese making experience and tasting lunch. The cost is 80€ per person (wine not included and transportation by private shuttle is about 50€ ). We will also have the chance to explore Cortona in the afternoon. Only breakfast will be served at La Selva.

On Saturday October 6 we have a very rare and tasty excursion into the forest for truffle hunting. This includes a guided nature walk in the Chianti hills with a truffle expert and his hunting dog and a special truffle lunch paired with wine. The cost for this is 180€ per person and includes round trip transportation. No lunch will be served at La Selva.

There will be a massage therapist on call at the villa for 70€ per hour.

On Tuesday, Friday and Sunday we have afternoon cooking classes scheduled at La Selva and some unstructured time for you to explore on your own or just to relax and enjoy the dolce vita.
